The main type of wood chisels that you’ll want to buy when first getting started in traditional woodworking are bench chisels, mortise chisels, and paring chisels. there are other specialty chisel, like japanese chisels, carving chisels & gouges, wood turning chisels, fishtail chisels, dovetail chisels, etc.. This year, veritas started making its own bench chisels, and i was happy to take a set for a test drive. the chisels were flawless out of the box. the blades are made from o1 tool steel, and they are stout, registering 5/16- in. thick at the ferrules and tapering to 1/8-in. at the bevel, or tip.

Beveled edged bench chisels not too short and not too long these chisels are the most common and most useful chisel found in a cabinet shop. the most important criteria are that they should be comfortable in the hand, hold a good edge, and be easy to sharpen.. A chisel is a tool with a characteristically shaped cutting edge (such that wood chisels have lent part of their name to a particular grind) of blade on its end, for carving or cutting a hard material such as wood, stone, or metal by hand, struck with a mallet, or mechanical power..
